Orwell's Dystopia: A Dashboard Of The British Panopticon
The British state has created over 120 systems which covertly monitor and profile its own citizens. It has enacted over 100 laws or programs which enable it to do so. Thatcher launched Orwell's nightmare. Blair scaled it. Cameron and May bloated it into something China would be envious of.
The United Kingdom has covert powers in some regard which China could only dream of. It has constructed an open prison which anyone is free to leave but no-one escapes and no-one questions. It's proper, dear boy. Built until English law and in most cases, Parliamentary sign-off. Leave whenever you like. But if you want to stay, you must accept the terms and conditions.
Police and councils can read your text messages at will. Border staff can't stop the boats, but they can map your social media. You may not opt out of PAYE, but you are free to complain to your MP about capital gains tax. Everywhere you go, you are on a camera. Speak too loudly and you might receive a jail sentence because of "public order."
The prison is open. You can walk out. When you walk in, you don't even need a uniform. You can't see the guards, but they can see you. The guards can see everyone. Not everyone can see the guards. This is a British democracy, not a standard one. We must keep order.
We are not "sleepwalking into an Orwellian society." Thatcher created it while we were celebrating the victory of the Falklands War. We walked right into it decades ago. We are living Orwell's hell. The British polite kind, without all the ceremony.
The only thing left now, is to destroy it.
